W. DONOVAN'S ACTIVITY ON THE FORMATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE US OFFICE OF STRATEGIC SERVICES

Abstract

The article is devoted to William Donovan (1883-1959), the major figure of the U.S. intelligence community during the World War II and the chief of the Office of Strategic Services. The author studies Donovan’s contribution to the formation and development of the structure and the specific work of the U.S. strategic intelligence. The author shows special interest to Donovan's principles and ideas that became the main principles of the U.S. intelligence. The author uses the publications of Donovan's colleagues, as well as the studies of leading contemporary historians. On this basis the author makes conclusions about the value of W. Donovan's ideas which were implemented, especially in connection of the U.S. participation in World War II, and for the American intelligence in the whole.
