The first emigration of the Zaporozhye Cossacks
Abstract
The author investigates the history of the Zaporozhie Cossacks' first emigration which lasted for as long as 25 years. The article reveals the reasons why a significant number of the Zaporozhie Cossacks withdrew from the Russian empire in 1709. It also tells about their adaptation at the new place of residence and discloses their motives for returning to Russia. The struggle for influence over the Cossacks is considered in the context of the military and political opposition between Russia and Turkey and some other European countries, which supported Osman Empire.
