THE ROLE OF FRANCE IN FORMING THE STATE BOUNDARIES IN THE MIDDLE EAST AND NORTH AFRICA IN THE EARLY XXTH CENTURY

Abstract
The article focuses on the problem of France’s participation in the process of forming state boundaries in the Middle East and North Africa. The authors identify the interests of France in the Middle East in the early XXth century, that have determined the position of France and its concrete steps to divide the spheres of influence in the former Arab provinces of the Ottoman Empire. The authors distinguish three key factors that have influenced the position of France in the question of borders in the region of the Middle East and in North Africa. They are: the importance of the Ottoman Empire for resisting the spread of Russian influence in the East; Franco-British rivalry in the region; the colonial policy of France and the support of non-Muslim and non-Turkish peoples of the Ottoman Empire by the national liberation movements.
