To the problem of relationship between so-called senatus consultum de bacchanalibus and Livys account about the persecution of the bacchic rites in Rome

Abstract

This article is dedicated to comparative
study of two important evidences
about the suppression of the cult of Bacchus
in 186 B.C. in Rome. This is so-called senatus
consultum de Bacchanalibus, the epigraphic
testimony from south-Italian site Tirioli and
the report of Titus Livius about persecution
of the Bacchanals, which is contained in 18-th
chapter of 39-th book of his historical work.
The main purpose of this article is to determine,
how the inscription and three senates
decisions about Bacchanals, which are mentioned
by Livy, correspond one another: which
of three senates decrees had become a basis of
the Tiriolis inscription; and what character
has the so-called senatus consultum de Bacchanalibus
- is it concluding and final decision
in the persecution of the Bacchanals or
this inscription is simply pure compilation of
different decisions of the roman senate, which
is deprived of all sense as a document, which
had put a point in the process of 186 B.C.
