Статья посвящена названию Кавказа и названию мифического героя Прометея - Пхьармат, при- кованному, согласно легенде, к скале. Отсутствие еди- ного мнения в научной среде относительно этимологий этих слов ставит перед исследователями новые вопросы. Автор акцентирует внимание на своём видении пробле- мы, пытаясь выяснить не столько их мифический смысл, сколько реальный. Анализ оригинального лингвистичес- кого материала, собранного на одном из древних диалек- тов чеченского языка - чабирлоевском, позволяет вы- светить в изучаемой теме новые стороны и значительно расширить смысловое содержание изучаемых терминов.
The present paper explores the history and etymology of two names - the Caucasus and Prometheus (or Pkharmat in the Chechen version). Different scientists hold different opinions concerning the etymologies of these two words. This brings forward a new set of questions for the researchers. According to legend, Prometheus was chained to a rock in the Caucasus. The author of the article, however, investigates real rather than mythical meanings of these names. The analysis of the original linguistic material in Chabirloevskiy dialect (one of the ancient dialects of the Chechen language) allows to throw new light on the origin of the two names, as well as to expand considerably their semantic contents.
